Since starting Resource Synergy in 2015, I’ve witnessed firsthand the evolving landscape of waste management and its financial impact on businesses in Spokane. The journey towards sustainability has been marked by significant changes, especially in waste pricing. The following are a few thoughts and insights I’ve picked up along the way.

Understanding the Shift in Waste Disposal Costs

One of the reasons I first started Resource Synergy in Spokane is because our trash disposal cost is nearly twice the national average. This incentivizes waste diversion and prevention. This dynamic has only increased in the last eight years. You may have seen an article in the Spokesman-Review about the changing costs of waste removal within city limits.

When compounded with the 2.9% annual increase of prior years, this equates to a remarkable 38% since 2015. This escalation affects operational budgets and highlights the need for efficient waste management strategies.

The Financial Logic of Recycling

The cost of recycling has also increased. In fact, in many places, recycling costs as much as trash disposal. This is not the case in Spokane, though. Our city leaders have chosen to keep recycling affordable at ¼ the cost of trash service. This pricing difference is crucial – for every yard of waste you shift from trash to recycling, you’re not just reducing environmental impact but also unlocking savings. If your building’s recycling program is nonexistent or underdeveloped, it’s time to stop throwing money away and commit to making an improvement.

Maximizing Savings through Effective Recycling Programs

Now is an opportune time for businesses to evaluate their waste management practices. Whether you are considering initiating a recycling program or looking to enhance an existing one, the focus should be on effective segregation and minimization of waste. Simple steps like implementing collection bins & signage, optimizing collection schedules, and educating employees can significantly reduce costs.

Sustainability: A Shared Responsibility

As businesses, we have a shared responsibility towards our environment. Embracing recycling isn’t just about compliance or cost savings; it’s about contributing to a sustainable future. Every step we take toward efficient waste management has a ripple effect on our community’s ecological footprint.

Making Crucial Decisions

In these times of rising waste disposal costs, adopting or improving recycling programs is more than a financial strategy – it’s a commitment to sustainability. As you navigate these changes, remember that our choices today will shape our environmental legacy. Let’s work together to make a positive impact.
